Norwegian PhD requirements differ by institution — number of articles, how many must be accepted before submission, and lead-author rules all vary. Treat this as the shape of the rules, and confirm the specifics with your faculty.

A doctoral methodology has to do something a master's one never does: hold together across several separate papers that each make their own method choices. The committee looks for one coherent research design behind the collection — evidence that the papers were planned as a programme, not assembled from whatever worked.

Draw the whole project on one page: each planned paper, its method, and the arrow showing what it feeds into next. If the arrows don't connect — if paper three's method has nothing to do with papers one and two — you've found the coherence problem now, while you can still fix it.

    Choose a design that spans the programme

    Decide the overarching methodological approach for the whole doctorate first — the frame within which each paper's specific method sits. Whether the papers are all quantitative, all qualitative, or a mixed sequence, the reader must see one logic connecting them.

    Justify each paper's method within the whole

    Every paper still needs its own methodological justification — but at doctoral level you must also explain how it fits the programme. Why this method here, why in this order, and how it builds on what came before? That inter-paper logic is what makes the design doctoral.

    Design for replicability and rigour

    Each method must be documented well enough that another researcher could repeat it, and defensible on the field's own standards for validity, reliability, or trustworthiness. At this level, sloppy method is the fastest route to a hostile viva.

    Anticipate the methodological critique

    Your opponent at the defense will probe the design hardest. Know the weaknesses of your chosen methods, why you accepted those trade-offs, and what alternatives you rejected and why. A design you can defend under pressure is a design that was truly chosen.

Design the programme, not just the papers

The papers will each defend their own method; your job is the logic that links them. Committees reward a design that reads as planned rather than accumulated.

Justify every method against its alternatives

Don't just say what you did — say what you didn't do and why. The rejected options are half of a serious methodological argument.

Write methods for replication

Enough detail that a peer could repeat each study. Vague procedure reads as work that can't be checked — and at doctoral level, that's fatal.

Your methodology should cover

  • One overarching design for the programme
  • Each paper's method, justified
  • The logic linking the papers
  • Alternatives considered and rejected
  • Validity / reliability / trustworthiness
  • Replication-level documentation
  • Ethics integrated into the design

Common traps

That reads as opportunism, not design. Show the connecting logic — or, if the papers really diverged, explain honestly what still unites them.

A method you can describe but not defend.

Know its weaknesses and the alternatives you rejected. The opponent will find the soft spots; better that you named them first.
