Five years, one contribution.

A doctorate is a long project that has to survive its own middle. Pick where you are — each topic opens the full guide: what to do first, how to do it well, what usually goes wrong, and how to know you're done.

Norwegian PhD requirements differ by institution — number of articles, how many must be accepted before submission, and lead-author rules all vary. Treat this as the shape of the rules, and confirm the specifics with your faculty.

Most doctorates don't fail on intelligence. They fail on time — on a plan that assumed everything would work, and left no room for the year when nothing did. Your first job is not to plan the ideal project. It is to plan a project that still finishes when a third of it goes wrong.

Write down your submission date. Then count backwards, not forwards. Work back through: thesis assembly, the kappe, the last paper, its review cycle, its data collection. You will run out of years before you run out of plans — and that collision, right now on paper, is the single most useful thing you can do this month.

    Anchor to the real deadline, then work backwards

    Norwegian PhD scope is defined by what's achievable in roughly three years of full-time research effort, even where the position runs longer with teaching duties. Fix your submission date first and reverse-engineer everything from it. Forward planning always overfills the years; backward planning shows you what won't fit.

    Plan the papers, not the years

    An article-based thesis is typically three to five papers plus the kappe — so your real schedule is a stack of paper lifecycles, not a smooth timeline. Each paper has its own arc: design, data, analysis, drafting, submission, review, revision, acceptance. Map those arcs and you have a plan; map calendar years and you have a wish.

    Budget for peer review honestly

    This is where plans die. A single review round routinely takes many months, and a rejection sends you back to the start of that clock at a new journal. Assume every paper needs more than one submission attempt. If your plan only works when every paper is accepted first time, you do not have a plan.

    Front-load the paper that must be accepted

    Many Norwegian faculties require at least one article accepted for publication before you may submit the thesis. That single rule reshapes your whole schedule: the paper carrying that requirement must be started early and sent to a journal with a realistic turnaround, because acceptance is not something you can rush at the end.

    Protect the kappe's time

    The kappe is not a formality you write in the final fortnight. It is the sole-authored piece where your independent contribution is judged, and it needs real months. Book that time now, before the papers expand to fill it.

    Re-plan every six months

    A five-year plan written once is fiction by year two. Revisit it every six months with your supervisor and cut scope deliberately rather than letting it collapse by accident. Deliberate cuts are strategy; forced cuts at the end are damage.

Best practices

Plan backwards from submission

Forward plans always fit; backward plans tell the truth. Start at the deadline and walk back until you hit today — whatever doesn't fit is what you must cut now, on purpose.

Assume rejection at least once

Build a rejection and a full re-submission into the schedule of every paper. Candidates who plan for first-time acceptance lose a year the first time reality disagrees.

Keep one paper always in review

Review time is dead time you cannot control — so it should always be running in the background while you work on something else. An empty pipeline is wasted months.

Cut scope early, not late

Dropping a fourth paper in year two is a decision. Dropping it in year five is a crisis. Review scope every six months and shrink deliberately.

Your plan should account for

  • A fixed submission date, worked backwards
  • One lifecycle per paper, not calendar years
  • Realistic peer-review turnaround times
  • At least one rejection and re-submission
  • Early start on the must-be-accepted paper
  • Protected months for the kappe
  • Teaching, coursework, and duty percentages
  • Ethics/Sikt approval lead time
  • A six-month re-planning cycle

Common traps

A plan that only works if everything works.

Stress-test it: assume one paper is rejected twice and one dataset fails. If the plan dies, it was never a plan. Build the slack in now.

Leaving the kappe to the final months.

The kappe is where your contribution is judged, and it's the one piece nobody can co-author for you. Reserve real months and start sketching it from year two.

Discovering the acceptance requirement in year four.

Find out now how many of your articles must be accepted before you may submit. That number sets your whole schedule — and it is far too late to learn it once the clock is short.

Counting the five years as five research years.

Teaching duties, coursework, and administration eat a substantial share. Your actual research time is much closer to three full-time years — plan against that, not the calendar.
